In the beginning, there we were and we’re likely to survive the mass extinction. Yet being invisible to the naked eye means we’re easily ignored.
But make no mistake, we are everywhere and our single-cell selves and multicellular communities are widely misunderstood. People often think we’re dirty but that’s anthropocentric micro-biophobia. The human body contains more than 100 trillion of us, weighing over four pounds - and that’s just in the gut.
So spare a thought for our unseen majority. We’re the biosphere’s life support system. Because macroscopic organisms depend on us, changes to our biodiversity will impact all other organisms and their ability to cope with climate change.
